The tee dress vs the tea dress

Tee dress vs Tea dress

When it comes to dresses do you go for traditional and feminine, or cool and edgy? This season there is plenty from both sides to choose from. The classic tea dress offers ladylike dressing. With this style it's all about pretty details like pleats, Peter Pan collars and floral prints. On the other side of the coin there's the simple tee dress. With its laid-back, squarer shape, this cut doesn't emphasise a woman's curves like the tea dress does, but it feels really contemporary.

The tee dress

  • On-trend and feels new
  • Can wear alone or over leggings, tights or skinny jeans
  • The perfect canvas for a statement necklace
  • Great for covering up problem upper arms

The tea dress

  • Flatters curves
  • Works well with vintage pieces
  • Can be dressed up or down
  • Lots of different prints, patterns and styles on offer

Personally, I'm a fan of both. I'll be wearing tee dresses more like tunics, perhaps with thick opaque tights and boots. When it comes to tea dresses I'll be teaming mine with heels and a tweed coat.

Which style do you prefer?

Top picks from Poppy Lux

I've recently moved offices to a much more central location in London. That means I can get out to a lot more press days and events than I've been able to the past couple of years. Of course, I'll be sharing my finds here on the blog. Last week I saw the brand Poppy Lux at a press day and thought it was a really good value and interesting brand. The autumn collection is called 'Hollywood Dreamer' and has a young and care-free spirit as well as lots of striking prints. See the lookbook here. The label started in Brighton and has just enough of an edge and attitude to make it stand out from the crowd.

Here are my favourite three pieces online now...

The sweatshirt

Take this Ali Sweatshirt, £36.00, and wear it with a leather pencil skirt for a stylish contrast of casual and smart.

The pencil skirt

I love the cut and colour of the Lola Skirt, £32.00. It's a really sexy, figure-hugging style that would work dressed down with a cosy knit or teamed with a little black lace cami for a night out.

The standout blouse

The Missy Blouse, £28.00, has a dipped hem sheer panel at the back which gives winter florals a fresh twist.

What to wear this weekend

What to wear this weekend by thestylepa featuring Dorothy Perkins

It's been quite a shock to the system this week; winter arrived with a chilling wind and a far-from-sunny disposition. Luckily I already have my winter coat sorted, but had that not been the case I would have been tempted by this pink one from Topshop. Pink may not be perfectly practical but it's certainly winning all the style points this season when it comes to outerwear. Pink isn't the only shade on my radar though. The fluffy mint green jumper pictured from Dorothy Perkins is on my wish list too. It's cosy, soft and stylish to boot. Just the thing to brighten up these dreary winter days.

This week was the first outing of the year for my chunky knitted snood. It's so warm and so good to snuggle up in on cold bus journeys home from work. I also swear by leather gloves for a better fit, especially if you've got smaller hands. Teaming leather, or PU (budget dependent), with softer textures is my favourite combination this winter.

This weekend I'm off to the footie so would definitely opt for a more casual outfit, but come Saturday night, for a few drinks at the pub, this outfit would be ideal.

What will you be wearing this weekend?

I don't know about you, but Pinterest has become a big source of inspiration for me. From fashion to interior design, it's filled with great ideas and objects I'd love to own. My Pinterest boards make up a little corner of the internet that's been curated by me, and for Christmas I've created a board of gift ideas for your fashion-loving friends and family. I've hand-picked shiny, sparkly and stylish things for a head start on that Christmas shopping.

But my board is just one of many showcasing gorgeous gift ideas on Pinterest. In fact, Pinterest is compiling a hub with boards aimed at different personality types. So whether you are buying for a fashion fan or a crazy cat lady, you'll find that Pinterest is a good place to start and get some fresh inspiration. I'm hooked.

Shoes under £300

With almost 500 brands to choose from, Sarenza is a shoe paradise. Plus, a shoe almost always fits, so it's a safer gift option than clothing. They might blow the budget a little, but I love the glam shoes available from Marciano and Terry de Havilland (hint, hint boyfriend). As I'm a Sarenza ambassador, I also keep track of all my prospective shoe orders on this Pinterest board.

Jewellery under £60

The Zara and J.Crew jewellery ranges tick all the right boxes for a reasonably priced gift to adorn and be adored. Jewellery is probably the thing I pin most often. I'm a fashion magpie myself.

blogger designed heels for sarenza

I was trawling the 'new collection' section of shoe website Sarenza this week, as I often do, and I stumbled upon this pair of shoes called 'Don't call me a fashion blogger'. Intrigued, I delved deeper and discovered that the shoes were designed by Francesca, from a website called 'Don't call me a fashion blogger'. Her favourite things to write about are shoes and accessories, so it's fitting that she was asked to collaborate on this pair of high heels, part of an exclusive capsule collection from Sarenza.

I love the shoe design and its contrasts, from the textured grey to metallic flowers and gold-coloured hardware. It's fun and playful, and it got me thinking about what my dream shoe would look like. Probably black and gold, with a touch of glitter perhaps.

If you could design a shoe or bag, what would it look like?

Get the look: Lizzie's purple cocktail dress in Drop Dead Fred

One of my favourite films of all time has to be Drop Dead Fred. I grew up watching it and couldn't count the number of times I've seen it. This week, something in my emails jumped out at me. A purple, tule-draped purple dress from Amanda Wakeley. Beautiful, as you would expect, it reminded me of the dress that Lizzie wears to the fancy cocktail party in the film. I wonder if that's where they found the inspiration for the design. OK, probably not. But, wouldn't it be funny if Lizzie became an unlikely style icon, more than 20 years after the film was released! I've yet to see a designer example of Fred's green and yellow suit and shirt, but I'll be keeping an eye on the catwalks just in case.

http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=dsm5xBotZhw&subid=&offerid=188737.1&type=10&tmpid=5370&RD_PARM1=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amandawakeley.com%2Fshop%2Fready-to-wear%2Fdresses%2Faine-dress-1.htmlhttp://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=dsm5xBotZhw&subid=&offerid=188737.1&type=10&tmpid=5370&RD_PARM1=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amandawakeley.com%2Fshop%2Fready-to-wear%2Fdresses%2Faine-dress-1.html

The other thing that blew my mind about looking this film up again, is that the actress who plays Lizzie (Phoebe Cates) was born the same year as my mum! It's crazy how you forget that people from your favourite childhood movies actually age!

It's a shame she didn't have a longer acting career. Gremlins is probably the only other well-known film she appeared in. She also modelled from the age of 14 and has appeared in Vogue, Elle, Seventeen and others. Now, she's married to Kevin Kline and mother to their two children and owns her own little boutique called The Blue Tree in New York's Upper East Side. I wish I had gone there when I stayed in that area of NYC a couple of years ago.

Interview with jewellery designer Sara Hartley

Sara Hartley creates beautiful jewellery and recently launched a charming range called 'Tinies'. The little crafted outlines of people, children or animals are a great way to capture someone's character in a piece of jewellery, and they can be customised too. See Sara's jewellery designs here. I caught up with her to find out about her style and what inspires her work.

Tell us a bit about yourself?
I turned 40 this year... so far I'm feeling good for it. I have two beautiful children, a girl of 6 and a boy of 4 – they're my little treasures. They helped inspire my latest collection and kept my creative juices flowing even when it was hard to find the time.

Why did you start start your jewellery label?
I always liked the idea of being my own boss, making the decisions and managing my own time. It allowed me to indulge in the design side and choose to get help in the areas I'm not so good at.

What inspires you?
Small things. I've always loved anything very, very tiny – especially spring time when you can just see the little shoots growing out of a plant or tree. I take a lot of inspiration from nature.

If you had to wear just one fashion designer's clothes for life, who would it be?
I'm a bit more addicted to jeans then a particular designer – my sister can't get over the amount I buy and how often I tell her I don't have any! So I would choose Paige Jeans, or more recently I have started to wear a new designer 'Frame'.

What are your top 3 high street stores and why?
Zara: you can always count on good stylish looking shirts, or a classic cashmere jumper. Maje: I love these French designers that are coming to our high street – well cut, classic with a bit of a twist. They're your everyday pieces but stylish and pretty. Kooples: their jackets are a beautiful cut and I particularly love their lace tops.

What has been your biggest ever bargain?
A stunning Diane von Furstenberg dress that I had my eye on for a wedding. I decided to splash out and just buy it and when I got there it had 50% off! A great surprise.

And what has been your biggest ever splurge?
My Anya Hindmarch black bag. It’s the perfect bag for a jeweller as it has lots of small compartments inside.

What is your beauty routine?
I'm very particular about taking off all my make-up at night. Sometimes I'll put on night cream, but always eye cream and lip balm. My morning routine depends on the day ahead. If I have meetings then I'll use foundation. On an even more important day I might bring out the beauty flash balm first. I'm a real girly girl who loves putting make up on. My daughter doesn't understand why I have to or why it takes so long. Come rain or shine, busy or lazy days, I also use body lotion.

What do you collect?
Believe it or not, small things and white pots. Beautifully hand-crafted white and cream pots.

Which celebrity would you love to dress and why?
Simon Cowell. There is definitely something about him but he just needs a revamp.

Which celebrity do you think has the best style?
Kylie Minogue or, the icon of my era, Sarah Jessica Parker.

How do you turn around a bad hair day?
That's easy. I have long blonde hair that I scrunch up into a big bun on the top of my head, or a high ponytail with a small quiff at the front.

What jewellery is perfect for on a first date?
Something that sits right in the middle of your chest plate – not too low that it's uncomfortable to look at or but also not too high that it looks like its choking you. I would go for something delicate and unusual that catches the eye – sparkles are always a winner.

Here are a few of Sara's designs...

The lady is a vamp

When it comes to Christmas parties sequins and sparkle usually dominate. However, there's a look that's elegant, striking and just as stylish for glam occasions. I'm talking about black lace and vampish red lips. I'm currently thinking that this will be my office Christmas party look. I'll team a black lace peplum top with a leather skirt, and finish the look with red shoes and matching red lips.

What are you wearing to your Christmas party?

Dior Pure Poison fragrance for christmas gifting

Christmas is coming and one of the gifts I always love to receive is perfume. I couldn't quite wait until Christmas this year though and I snapped up a bottle of Dior Pure Poison for myself from Selfridges a couple of weeks ago. Dior fragrances are up there with the best. Here are my top three picks of perfumes I'd like to unwrap this Christmas Day.

Dior Pure Poison fragrance for christmas gifting

Dior Pure Poison

I remember wearing this when I was single and dating because it always got me compliments. Of course, I don't need a man to say I smell nice; it's reward enough enough to catch a whiff of the scent yourself. If you like subtle, floral scents then this probably isn't for you. It's sensual, exotic and heady – perfect for a night out and something that's lasting and memorable. Notes include orange blossom, jasmine, amber and sandalwood for the ultimate in seduction. I just wish that I could still get hold of the limited edition hair mist that I had so many years ago. I had to re-buy it again and again on eBay to satisfy my addiction to it – I couldn't get enough!

Miss Dior fragrance for christmas gifting

Miss Dior

Miss Dior is a sweet, sexy and playful fragrance with a more youthful appeal. I'd wear it as an evening scent, perfect for a night with the girls as it's not quite as sensual as Pure Poison. You'll notice the notes of orange essence, neroli and rose essence as well as Indonesian patchouli essence, combining for the feminine scent. I usually avoid sweet fragrances, but the quality of the ingredients in this concoction stop it feeling too overpoweringly sugary.

J'adore dior fragrance for christmas gifting

J'adore

Described by Dior as 'A unique, rich and generous bouquet of flowers', this scent has been around for years. It reminds me of working in Debenhams as a teenager and getting that waft of perfume every time I walked through the beauty hall. This scent features Comoro Islands yland-ylang essence, Damascus rose essence and jasmine sambac asolute. It's fresh and sophisticated, making it a good option for every day, and a scent that works for all ages.

What to wear this weekend

It's all about getting dressed up during December, so this weekend why not go all out in dazzling sequins and fabulous faux fur. I've had my eye on this dress from Topshop for a while, and there's also a skirt in the same fabric if that suits your figure better. The colours are gorgeous, so I've picked out the blue hues and matched to a nail polish from Butter London (one of my favourite nail brands). jewellery from Dorothy Perkins completes the look, alongside some chunky-heeled boots. Simply team with opaque tights to brave the chill.

Beauty get the look

Model Lindsey Wixson really suits a tangerine lip and I love the soft make-up look of the above shot. It's from the DSquared2 SS14 show at Milan fashion week and has a retro, tropical feel. I'm definitely partial to orange lipstick myself and alternate between bright tangerine, neon pink and rich red. I'm lucky that most colours suit me I suppose. If you want to recreate Lindsey's look, here are a few pointers. You can also click the image above to shop my product suggestions over on Polyvore.

The base

This fresh look calls for a flawless complexion. Choose an illuminating foundation that gives good coverage. You'll also need a great concealer for the under-eye area. Then use a highlighter on the apples of the cheeks, chin and nose to add dimension to the look and create a subtle glow.

The eyes

The make-up artist has opted for a soft, warm browns across the eyes. Use a palette with three coordinating shades for ease. Use the lightest as a base across the eye and keep the centre of the eyelids quite light. Then work in the mid-tone brown to the eye sockets, concentrating on the outer side of the eye. The darkest shade can be used right by the lash line in the outer corners of the eye to soften the effect of brown eyeliner. Use a brown eyeline just on the upper lids, close the the lashes. The wide-eyed look is achieved by false lashes, but go for ones that are longer at the outer corners of the eyes. Mascara can be kept to a minimum to keep everything quite soft and demure.

The brows

The brows are really important for this look. Extra colour has been applied at the top of the natural brows in a sweeping arch shape. Then the brows have been brushed upwards. If you are using a brow pencil, use soft, short applications of colour. My personal preference is to use a brow powder or wax as these give a much more natural effect. A shimmer-free eye shadow can work quite well if you don't have the right brow product.

The lips

Lindsey has been blessed with the most amazing lips so any colour makes an impact on her. For the rest of us, using a striking shade like orange still makes a real statement. Make sure lips are dry and line them first to stop any colour bleeding. I personally don't feel the need to apply lipstick with a brush, it's just best to layer up the colour and blot between applications to make sure it goes the distance.

What do you think of this look? Have you tried orange lipstick before?

Hot pink and geometric monochrome

Monochrome is a classic, which goes some way to explaining why it's tipped as a key trend every single season. But, reinventing monochrome or finding a way to wear it differently is the way to make sure it's updated for the season ahead. The magazine cover pictured above inspired me to pull out pieces that showcase geometric monochrome prints. Try a pop of hot pink for a slightly '80s-inspired take on the look.

She's electric

Electric blue is a colour I wish I had more of in my wardrobe. It's been a key trend this season which means there is plenty to choose from across the high street if you're looking for an injection of vibrant colour in your outfits. Blue leather is my lust-have, while a colour-popping pair of heels also make a real statement.

Check this...

Red checks and punk-inspired plaid have been a hit all season long. Try a check pencil skirt for a smart work look – great worn with a crisp white shirt or soft blouse. For a more casual look, plaid pumps, bags or coats are the way to go. There's still life in this look yet before the weather warms up.

What is your current colour crush or print-spiration?

Pink has been a hot topic this season and with pastels set to be big news into spring/summer it's worth giving this trend a try. The one thing to be careful of though is veering too far into Barbie territory. Pink can be chic and it can also be grown-up. Take a look at some of my top picks available to buy now...

This GILES screw-jacquard pleated skirt, £475, is definitely a buy-now-wear-later hot pick of mine. It will look so pretty with a little sleeveless, collared blouse as the weather warms back up.

Pink neoprene dress

Dorothy Perkins hits the mark with this flattering neoprene midi dress, £25. It's a great budget buy, and dressed up with a statement necklace and high heels it would work perfectly for a wedding or spring event.

Pink floral print jeans

Valentino pump perfection
I had a Christmas list, but then I also had an if-money-was-no-object Christmas list. Top of the latter was a pair of Valentino Rockstud pumps. I've been lusting after these for a while. I don't even have a favourite colour or print, any pair would do. Valentino has created a new icon with this design, and at £600 they are expensive but not completely out of reach. A generous Christmas bonus could get you a whole new wardrobe if you go for quantity, or a gorgeous pair of these shoes if you choose to invest in one must-have. Decisions, decisions...

Which shoes are on your Christmas lust-list?

It's a fabulous night for some faux fur

Boy has the temperature finally dropped! Before heading out today I stumbled upon a pair of boots that I love but have not worn all winter. The lace-up boots pictured top left are by Tamaris* and feature special technology in the soles to improve comfort. They also feature a faux-fur trim that matches my new faux fur collar from ASOS, which was a handy coincidence.

These collars are a great idea and are the perfect way to reinvent your winter coat throughout the season. The collars come in a variety of different colours and sizes, from lapel-style, like mine, to long tabard ones. Mine was reduced in the sale to £16.50, so it's a good time to snap one up.

Style Tip: The fur collars have a little hook to keep them secured but it works a lot better if you squeeze it closed and lift the collar over your head. I found it too loose otherwise, and after being a bit heavy-handed I pulled the little loop off.

At this time of year I love wearing faux fur because it suits the season, and it's the sort of thing you can't wear all year round. How do you style your faux fur?

Beyonce wears la perla to the grammy awards

The Grammy Awards never fail to provide controversy, and this year's ceremony was no different. Beyoncé was slammed by American mothers for her barely-there outfit choice. But, you have to admit, she wears it well. Those curves!

Beyoncé performed with husband Jay Z wearing part of the La Perla Cage collection (left). The collection is actually a three-piece set from 2013, all made by hand, including a strapless bra, knickers and high-waisted shorts. The caged top was inspired by a classic design from La Perla back in 2007 which was worn by Victoria Beckham in the Spice Girls''Headlines' video. The celebs can't get enough of this look it seems.

High shine and metallic finishes are a hot trend for the season, and one way I've been working the look is with this shiny new iPad sleeve from Where Else? In fact, the zip-up pouches could be used for a variety of different things, from stashing make-up to travel documents. The thing I love most about the range is the clever slogans and phrases that are part of the brand's signature. With Fashion Week coming up, I just wish I had snapped up the London Fashion Week version.

Interview with Needle Knitwear founder Lizzie Cawthray

$

0
My latest Q&A is with Lizzie Cawthray who is founder and managing director of a luxury knitwear label called Needle. After starting her career at LK Bennett, Lizzie'decided to start her own label. The debut collection of wearable, contemporary knitwear launched in autumn last year. She's achieved so much already, and well before she's 30 years old which is no mean feat.

Lizzie Cawthray
Tell us a bit about yourself?
Lizzie: I'm a 27-year-old girl based in Yorkshire, but my work means I get to spend lots of time in London with my best friends. I love what I do and feel so grateful that I've been able to do what I wanted to do. All my spare time is spent with friends and family; they are a sounding board for all my bright ideas!

Why did you start your label?
Lizzie: I started Needle because I wanted to create a range of knitwear that was fun and wearable but that was luxurious and good quality too. I didn't want to be restricted by other people's influence so I set out to build something that I totally adore and am incredibly passionate about.

What inspires you?
Lizzie: I'm completely inspired by beautiful things. I've loved the roller-coaster ride of creating the brand, but mostly I love seeing a design coming alive, from the initial sketches to the prototypes, to seeing people wearing them and falling in love. I believe anyone who has a Needle piece should be completely in love with it.

If you had to just wear one fashion designer's clothes for life who would it be?
Lizzie: Tricky question... I'm probably too mainstream with my clothes but I couldn't live without good handbags so it would have to be Anya Hindmarch.

What are your top 3 high street stores and why?
Lizzie: Zara because you can get some amazing basics and I love their jeans; Cos, it's often quite simple but still stylish; and Whistles as there's often a pop of colour or something a bit interesting.

What has been your greatest ever bargain?
My Paul & Joe Sister Mustard Cocoon coat that I bought from ALC in Edinburgh last year. I adore it and always feel amazing in it.

Autumn/Winter Needle Collection

And what has been your biggest ever splurge?
Lizzie: Probably a handbag. I'm a complete sucker for a nice handbag.

What is your beauty routine?
Lizzie: I keep it relatively simple with cleanser and toner morning and evening (I use Simple products). My sister bought me some lovely Temple Spa products for Christmas and I love their Be Strong face serum – it's brilliant.

Which celebrity would you love to dress and why?
Lizzie: I've personally always loved Jessica Alba's style; she can do chic really well but also casual. That's exactly what Needle is trying to achieve, complementing both sides.

Which celebrity do you think has the best style?
Lizzie: Diane Kruger. She is gorgeous and always so stylish.

What is your favourite trend of the moment?
It's all about leather at the moment and I am quite fan I have to say!

How do you turn around a bad hair day?
Lizzie: My hair is like a lion's mane, so I tend to pin it all up and go quite '20s with it to override bad hair days!

What would you wear on a first date?
Lizzie: Having been on a first date only two months ago I went for leather front leggings with black wedge boots, a cream silk shirt, my Needle Milan jacket and the cream Needle Shawl. It seems to have worked pretty well; he's now my boyfriend!

Check out the latest Needle designs here.

If dressing smart is a must in your workplace it can be easy to get stuck in a rut. If you want to inject a little fashion edge into your workwear, then try these quick tips in time for spring...

Bright foot forward

Court shoes are perfect for smart workplaces, but who says they have to be black? Colour-popping hues are an easy way to brighten things up for spring and I love the jewel tones of these shoes from Georgia Rose.

Brightly coloured heels by Georgia Rose at Sarenza, £75.70.

The pep-cil skirt

The pencil skit is an office staple, but you can make it feel more 'now' by choosing one with a peplum hemline for a new take on this classic silhouette. Try Asos for a cheaper version than the pricey one I love below.

Sheer genius

As spring approaches, there are going to be loads of pretty blouses and shirts to choose from. Try one with sheer or burnout detailing to revamp your look. Simply wear over a camisole to keep things modest.

Blouse, £22, from Dorothy Perkins

Be jewelled

If you haven't got much money to spend then jewellery can be a great way to add colour and personality to your look. Zara has some great statement pieces while H&M often has some inexpensive hidden gems (excuse the pun).
