Silver block heel sandals

With a high shine silver finish and chunky block heel, these shoes from Georgia Rose tick off two of the season's hottest trends in one hit. I've been dabbling with metallics for a few seasons, but I really love the shape and style of these shoes for summer. They'd look amazing with a tan and neon nail polish. Wear them with soft silk joggers and a relaxed camisole top and your holiday evening look is sorted.

Shoes are called Fabiola by Georgia Rose at Sarenza, £75.70.

What to wear this weekend

I don't know about you, but I am so ready for spring. We've had some lovely weather already, but the temperature is still far from tropical. Regardless, I've ditched the heavy winter coat and I don't intend on going back; it's all about a soft leather jacket instead. The one I've picked out for this look has a relaxed, slouchy feel and grey makes a refreshing change from black; it's lighter and somehow less wintry.

As for cheering up my wardrobe, I'm all for striking pops of colour, especially these zingy citrus shades of lime and tangerine. I'm loving this season's take on boyfriend jeans and they're the perfect weekend essential. Retailers have recognised that the edgy styling can be adapted for the girls with a more feminine fit, and that relaxed doesn't have to mean completely oversized. A simple but bold-hued court shoe definitely works with the turned-up hems on these jeans.

Meet Kim Lai, creative director of JAUNT Accessories. Originally from New York, Kim is now based in London and has been designing luxury travel accessories for 10 years. Kim's versatile bags are handcrafted in Italy and feature beautiful leathers and contrasting fabrics. I caught up with Kim for a quick Q&A...

Tell us a bit about yourself?
I am an extremely hard worker, passionate about my craft, and a perfectionist who is extremely detail orientated. Travelling has always been a big part of my life.

Why did you start your label?
I struggled to find a range of travel accessories that were both chic and practical and had a real sense of vacation style. I designed JAUNT to fill this gap in the market.

What inspires you?
Travelling inspires me. Different cultures have different ways of seeing things and I love to observe this.

If you had to just wear one fashion designer's clothes for life who would it be?
I love the effortless chic of Alexander Wang.

What are your top 3 high street stores and why?
Top Shop: I love that there is something for everyone there. Reiss: for the nice styles and good fit. Muji: I love the clear acrylic boxes and the understated stationery.

What has been your greatest ever bargain?
A pair of leather boots for £170 from the Prada outlet in Bicester Village.

And what has been your biggest ever splurge?
My biggest splurge was definitely my Vince soft leather trousers. They were totally worth it. I already have my eye on another pair!

What is your beauty routine?
Clarasonic brush, Caudelie Elixir to let the moisturizer absorb into the skin. Moisturizer from Shishedo.

What do you collect?
Bags, jackets and shoes!

Which celebrity would you love to dress and why?
I would love to dress Gwyneth Paltrow. She looks amazing in her neutral tones and I love her effortlessly chic style. I would love to add a little bit of colour to her accessories.

Which celebrity do you think has the best style?
Kerry Washington. She always gets it right!

What is your favourite trend of the moment?
Iridescent leather for bags and shoes.

How do you turn around a bad hair day?
Go to the Blow Dry Bar at Hershesons. It takes 30 minutes.

What would you wear on a first date?
My leather trousers and a silk v neck top with Valentino studded heels and a cool jacket.

What to wear this weekend: Mother's Day

Many of us are sure to be treating our mums for Mothering Sunday this weekend and I am no different. I'm heading to the Millennium Hotel in Mayfair with my mum for a special afternoon tea, so getting a little dressed up is definitely in order. For me, a floral dress is always a great option for spring, and this one from Oasis has a great print and colour palette. The photographic florals are traditional but with a modern spin which I love. A little black blazer, berry lips and colour-blocked accessories will finish the look fabulously.

What are you doing, and wearing, for Mother's Day?

Shoesday top pick: arty heels by Steve Madden

There's a new wave of arty prints on the shoe scene and I love these towering heels from Steve Madden that fit the trend perfectly. With wedding season on the horizon, they'd be a great way to jazz up a formal outfit and give it the fashion edge. It would be easy to pick out one of the colours in the shoes and coordinate your look around it for a fresh take on spring brights. They're definitely on my wish list.

If these float your boat then you might like to take a look at more bold footwear in Sarenza's artistic shoe edit. Too bold for you? They also come in brown, black and pewter, hurrah!

Afternoon tea at the millennium hotel in Mayfair, London

I rarely turn down the opportunity for tea and cake, and recently I had the chance to take my mum along to sample an afternoon tea with me. The fabulous folk at the Millennium Hotel in Mayfair invited us down on Mother's Day to explore the hotel and give their current menu a try.

I love hotels. There is something so indulgent about staying in a nice hotel, from watching TV in a spacious, cosy bed to the delights of a long bubble bath (in a bath that you will never have to clean). I also love nothing more than having a nose around in hotels, which is exactly how we started our Mother's Day jaunt. We were given a little tour, from seeing the entertaining spaces (I was lusting after the chandeliers) to checking out a couple of hotel suites with living rooms, huge beds and walk-in-wardrobes.

After some exploring and chit-chat with other bloggers and their mums it was time for tea. As afternoon tea menus in London go, it's actually very reasonably priced. £24.95 per person for a full tea, or £34.95 for extra sandwiches and a glass of fizz too. It's served in the Avista restaurant at the hotel, a light and airy setting where you can relax and take time over your tea in comfy chairs. The hotel itself is handily located just a stone's throw from Oxford Street and Bond Street, so you can tie in your trip with a spot of shopping – any excuse, right? The table setting was perfect for Mother's Day too. Everything is served up on Wedgwood china in the iconic Wild Strawberry pattern

As we tucked in, the chef explained the seasonality of the menu to us. The team make small changes throughout the year depending on what's in season. Cucumber and salmon are a permanent fixture though – it just wouldn't be a quintessential British tea without them. My other favourite sarnie option was the chicken and tarragon which was really creamy with just the right amount of tarragon to help it stand out. As for the cakes, we really were spoilt. From a miniature Crème brûlée and fruit tart to the mango mousse cake and chocolate eclair, the desserts were spot on. Oh, and I almost forgot the lovely warm sultana scones with clotted cream, berries and sweet lemon curd! I took home a little scone recipe book so I will have to give them a go myself.

It was great to see some of my fellow bloggers too – mum and I shared a table with Kristabel of I Want You to Know and Lucy of Shiny Thoughts. I don't manage to get to so many events these days as the day job takes up so much of my time, so having a little afternoon out was heavenly. We left the boys in the pub and managed to wangle a door-to-door lift from dad to finish the day. What a treat.

Blended ombre hair colour by Muse of London

ombre hair colouring by muse of london

Although I've had my hair in pretty much every style and colour, these days I'm pretty settled with my brunette locks. But I'm always up for trying something new, so when Jason from Muse of London asked me to pop in and try out his latest colouring techniques I was there in a flash.

Muse of London (which used to be a Lisa Shepherd salon) specialises in colour treatments and is based a few minutes walk from Oxford Circus. Last time I was there I had undertoning done – essentially a twist on the popular dip-dye where the hair is layered and only the underneath layers are dyed. This time, I was going for a subtle ombre look to just lighten my hair up on the ends for summer. You can see the results above.

Jason started off by back-combing parts of each section of hair that he was lightening which helps give it that natural look. We went for a warm, honeyed brown colour to blend naturally with my own brown hair. As my hair at the moment is pretty mousy at the roots, Jason also put a darker tint on the roots to give a bit more depth which was a really good call. He also added a little of the lighter colour to small sections of my fringe – it's a clever trick that makes it look nice and shiny, as if the light is reflecting off it.

I was interested to hear what customers had been asking for this season, and Jason explained that gone are the days where there is one look like 'The Rachel' that everyone is after, month after month. People get their inspiration from all over. 'One girl snapped a picture of a mannequin in Topshop because she wanted the same colour.' says Jason. 'People are more individual in their inspiration' he continued, 'people might want to change their look simply because someone at the office has gone and got the same colour'.

Jason is onto a winner, making it really easy to switch up your style and maintain a new 'do' with a menu of express services from £15 root touch-ups to special-event hair styling. The great thing about the ombre style I went for though is that you don't need such regular touch-ups and can just let it grow out naturally if that suits you better. Win-win.

TIGI sea salt spray
Jason also introduced me to a great product: CATWALK by TIGI Session Series Salt Spray. This is a summer must-have that really adds texture and enhances a soft wave perfectly. I'll definitely be picking some up when my current salt spray runs out. Look out for the luxe black packaging.

You can find Muse of London at 24 Mortimer Street, London, W1T 3JP. Open until 9pm on weekdays. Telephone: 020 7467 9560

In the mood for monochrome

Summer may be creeping up on us but when it comes to classic combinations black and white beats summer brights every time. I recently had a little shoe spree and snapped up some hot new monochrome styles to see me into the new season. From block heels to fancy flats, take a look at my top picks below...

monochrome shoe edit

The Shoes

Far left: These bold 'Ryskal' flats by Shellys London, £65, are my new favourites. They are perfect for work but easily carry me into evening too. I love them worn with skinny jeans and an oversized sheer shirt.

Top: Block heels are big news this season, which is great for me because my ankles hurt just thinking about sky-high heels. The white 'Cloudy Sandal' by Esprit, £45, is a bargain buy that works dressed up for summer weddings or down for post-work drinks. I love the double ankle strap design. They also come in black.

Bottom right: The 'Mocatre' monochrome heels by Best Mountain are a steal at £35.70, but are actually pretty darn comfy to wear. I love the high backs in striking graphic print – perfect worn with a full midi skirt.

The Inspiration

The Jasper Conran catwalk show for spring/summer 2014 summed up the move-on for monochrome. The bold and arty catwalk design made an instant impact, and the clothes did too. Graphic prints updated the clean and ladylike silhouettes for the season, while those white shoes with ankle straps felt so classy – in stark contrast to the white shoe's past reputation as something brash and tacky.

I love the mixed-print outfits as seen above. Wear your monochrome shoes with other graphic black and white prints for the ultimate cool contrast.

Shoesday top pick: Shellys London studded flats

studded shoes by shellys london

Today's top pick is a bit of a bargain. I ordered these studded flats from Shellys London a couple of months ago* as I've been trying to avoid wearing high heels so much. They took a little wearing in, but it was worth it. If you get in there quick, you can snap them in the Sarenza sale for just £27, reduced from £45.

I remember Shellys as a brand my fashionable auntie liked when I was younger and it's great that they've returned. The brand has a rich heritage. The first store was opened on London's Carnaby Street and they were a key player in the decades that followed, especially popular with the teens of the time who wanted to wear the very latest trends. The brand was sold in 2003, but was relaunched in 2012 and has since amassed a celeb following including the likes of Fearne Cotton and Taylor Swift. It's great to see that the style signature hasn't veered too far from the Shellys that many of us knew and loved. They've even brought back the Spice-Girl style platforms for a real blast from the past.

The A-List go strapless at Cannes

Steal their style... strapless

When it comes to style inspiration for summer occasions there's no better place to look than the Cannes Film Festival. The sun shines and the hectic schedule of press launches and parties means countless celeb outfits to give us ideas for what to wear.

The event has got off to a suitably stylish start this year with A-List names sporting strapless gowns by Calvin Klein at one of the festival's many soirees. Take your fashion cues from Rooney Mara, Naomi Watts, Lupita Nyong'o and Julianne Moore (pictured above) and go for a strapless style this season.

Top tips

  • Invest in a great strapless bra – I love Wonderbra's Ultimate Strapless Bra which is great for fuller busts.
  • Pay extra attention to moisturising the chest and shoulders. Something with a touch of subtle shimmer  looks great. Or try a fragrance with a slight shimmer like Roger & Gallet Eau Sublime Or Bois D'Orange.
  • When it comes to jewellery, a necklace on a shorter chain is best, or opt for a great pair of earrings and let the simplicity of the neckline shine.

Love bags? Love Moschino

love moschino bag in red and cream

I've never been one of those women who is obsessed with designer handbags. I tend to opt for something practical that goes with everything, and hate the idea of spending in excess of £500 to find something to cart all my belongings around in. If you are investing in a designer bag and want something at the lower end of the price range though then the Love Moschino collection is a pretty good place to look. I snapped up this style from Sarenza's website* which sells for just over £150, a mere snip in comparison to many other known bag brands – and the quality is just as good!

It served me well on a recent trip to Berlin – being of a size that works for a day sightseeing or an evening out for dinner. I even managed to fit my Canon bridge camera in there which meant not having to carry an extra camera bag too. See, who said fashion wasn't practical! The brand counts Dita von Teese among its celebrity fans which is kudos enough for me.

Patent red skirt as seen on Jennifer Lopez

j-lo album art for AKA

Jennifer Lopez is looking as hot as ever on the album art of her new release, due out on 17 June. She dons a patent red skirt by Celeb Boutique alongside a rather revealing top (although, not sure I can really call it that). It's a daring look, but the patent skirt trend is sticking around. These glossy pencil skirts look great with contrasting fluffy knits in winter and a simple white top in summer. You can get your hands on this style as seen on J-Lo for £75 at celebboutique.com. Are you brave enough to try this look?

Shoesday top pick: striped Birkenstock sliders

If there's one buzz word for shoes this season it's sliders (and no, not the miniature burger kind). We've probably all worn something like them before, and perhaps weren't planning on wearing them again anytime soon, but it's time for a re-think. Double strap styles with a moulded thick sole are hot news.

I've had a pair of Birkenstocks for a while, and when I was looking for mine there wasn't much in the way of choice. Now, however, Birkenstock has had a makeover and they're perfectly placed to take the crown as king of the pool sliders. I spied this fab pair on the Matches Fashion website this week; they're are so summery with a playful edge which gives them added appeal. The best thing though is that gold piping detail which adds a fashionable spin on a seasonal staple.

Don't think you have to dress down too much to wear these comfy flats though; the way to wear them now is with your floaty summer dresses or fluid tailoring for a surprising summer contrast. Try metallics or bold prints too – Dorothy Perkins' sliders from £15 in silver or floral designs are a purse-friendly alternative to my top pick above.

Just-married Poppy Delevingne recently posted this snap featuring a beautiful tote bag from Smythson (not to mention those beautiful blooms!) January Jones has also been seen sporting this particular arm candy. The bag is part of the 1887 collection which features bold, feminine and striking silhouettes.

I love the blush colour with contrasting black handles on this particular design. I bet the soft lambskin interior and calf leather exterior are super-luxurious. Shame I can't afford the £1495 price tag! Feeling flush? You can snap it up here.

New NKD SKN self tan from Vita Liberata

It's that time of year again; we're all baring more skin as the weather warms up. But that also means baring my rather luminous white body. I find that my face, shoulders and back tend to catch the sun quite quickly in the summer, but the rest of me doesn't. My legs in particular could always do with a little bit of help, and of course I'd rather not have to sit in the sun because of the damage it does to the skin.

So it was good timing to be invited to an event for the new tanning collection from Vita Liberata –  NKD SKIN. The range was designed to make the brand's high-quality tanning products accessible to all. They promise 'holiday skin in a bottle' with no nasty odour via lovely natural ingredients. Sounded good to me.

I decided to have a spray tan on the spot to try the new products for myself. The tan was really quick to apply and the claims are true, there is almost no odour, and certainly none of the biscuit-like smell that tanning products have become so known for. The tan dried almost instantly and started to develop over the next hour or so, but I never felt too orange. I loved the fact I could put my clothes back on straight away –
anything that saves time is a bonus I reckon.

I went for the medium shade which, despite my currently fair complexion, came out just right. On washing the tan off the following day I was left with a lovely golden glow which got me lots of compliments at work. I hadn't exfoliated beforehand so I did find that the fronts of my legs were a bit dry and there were some tell-tale marks there, so I definitely recommend giving your body a good scrub ahead of tanning. Other than that though, the tan looked even, and there were very few signs of it being fake. As it has worn off, it hasn't left me too patchy either. All in all, I'll definitely be trying it out myself at home.

The range includes a tinted tan mousse in medium and dark, £14.95, a tinted tan liquid in dark, £10, and a matte wash-off instant tan, £8.50. The collection is available at Superdrug.

NKD SKN's Top tips for a flawless tan...

  1. Exfoliate your skin to prepare for tanning. It provides the perfect base and ensures a long-lasting tan.
  2. Use a tanning mitt to protect the palms of your hands and get a streak-free finish. Pump the tanning product onto the mitt and apply to skin using elongated circular movements. Use sparingly on the hands, feet, knees and elbows.
  3. Don't moisturise before tanning as it will block the tan and can cause streaking.
  4. Wipe knuckles, knees, ankles, elbows and sides of the feet to prevent any product build-up. Rinse your tanning mitt and leave to dry naturally.

Becoming a redhead: what you need to know

$
0
0

I love Margot Robbie, and her changing hair colour has been a hot topic lately. She's just gone from brunette to redhead (rumoured to be for a new film role) and the makeover was courtesy of colour experts at the Paul Edmonds salon in Knightsbridge. Vernon Deysel is Creative Colour Director and he has a few expert tips for transforming your locks and becoming a redhead...

Red Tones

There's a tone to suit all hair colours. Vernon says: "This season red hair is a must for brunettes who want to intensify the red in the hair colour or for blondes who want to become more vibrant - Copper Blonde/Mahogany/Mahogany Browns work well." But, as always, there's a trend when it comes to seeing red. Rose golds that were really popular are making way for intense flamboyant reds.

I've personally had my hair every shade of red growing up. Experimenting meant I got to know what would and wouldn't suit my skin tone. I can tell you right now that I'll never, ever go strawberry blonde again – definitely not my shade. While brighter reds, mahogany and even red with blonde highlights all worked for me. I think I'd play it a little more subtle now though.

If, like me, you'd want a more toned-down look, Vernon suggests "a red shade with hints of browns; think Christina Hendricks with slices of different shades of reds/browns applied free hand, sweeping colour onto the hair to create multi-dimensional depth – that looks natural!"

What's your perfect shade?

Blondes: if you're fresh from summer holidays, glowing, tanned skin can wear copper and copper blonde shades perfectly.

Brunettes: you can pretty much carry off any shade of red, but ask your hairdresser to advise you if you've not gone red before.

Maintaining your red locks

Red hair can fade quite quickly (bummer!). To keep that lovely vibrant colour, Vernon advises using salon product such as Shu Uemura Full Shimmer shampoo and conditioner or Kerastase Chroma Captiv and LP Vitamino colour. If you can't afford salon brands then at least opt for products designed for coloured hair and ensure you use a heat protection spray when styling.

You can, of course, keep your colour topped up at the salon – a service that the Paul Edmonds salon offers, as do many others. You might need to pop back as much as every 3 weeks though to keep things in tip-top condition.

When I went red I went on holiday quite soon afterwards. The sun and chlorine did have a dramatic effect on the colour of my hair, so beware! I was actually pretty lucky that I loved the faded colour as much as the bright shade I'd originally dyed it. I had blonder chunks through red which ended up a lovely reddish/caramel colour – perfectly suited to the sunnier weather.

So much has changed since I started blogging back in 2007. The world of blogging has changed, I've changed and what people want to read has changed too. When I started out, blogging was a fun way to fill my time between university lectures, but lately, trying to fit even a simple few blog posts in has become a challenge. So, even though it's been a blast, I'm taking a break.

My blog has taken me from Paris to Berlin, and beyond. I've met amazing people, made lifelong friends and had so many great adventures. Now though, I'm shifting my priorities. Spending more time with family and friends, being more active, and getting away from my computer whenever I can are high on my new agenda. After all, London is one of the most awesome cities in the world and there's still so much of it I've yet to explore.

I'll still be pinning, tweeting and Instagramming. I'll probably even keep The Style PA Facebook page going for now, starting with a few updates from the blog archives, but it's time to put the blog to bed.

Thanks to you, my readers, for your time, comments and general awesomeness.

Jenny
